The window is seven weeks out
The early signing period for the Class of 2027 opens December 2 and runs through December 4. For most FBS programs, the weeks leading into that window are the most consequential stretch of the recruiting cycle.
Coaches know which positions they still need to fill and which committed athletes they are counting on. They are working through that sequence right now. Families who are paying attention will notice the difference.
What programs are deciding now
Every FBS program enters November with a target number of signees. The scholarship math is already set. What coaches are working through between now and December 2 is sequence: which committed athletes are firm, which slots still need filling, and whether any remaining needs require targeted outreach before the window opens.
The "are you planning to sign early?" conversation, usually framed as a routine check-in, is one of the clearest signals in fall recruiting. A coach who asks that directly is looking for confirmation before the board closes. A committed prospect who responds ambiguously may find the staff's attention shifting.
This is not unusual. It is how programs with finite scholarship allocations make decisions. Reading it clearly is part of navigating the process well.
For uncommitted seniors, the board is narrowing
Scholarship decisions do not wait for February. Programs that are approaching their target class size begin closing out interest in uncommitted seniors before December arrives, quietly and functionally.
An uncommitted senior who has been in contact with a staff may notice that contact becoming less initiated. That is often a board narrowing. It does not mean a door has closed permanently. Programs with late decommitments or unusual roster needs will continue active outreach past December 4. But the window of being evaluated on a program's primary board, rather than as a contingency, typically closes before the signing window.
What families should be paying attention to now
A few things worth tracking in the next seven weeks:
- Athletes who have verbally committed should have a clear conversation with their family about the early signing period, and then have that same conversation with the staff. Whether to sign in December versus February is a legitimate strategic question. Understanding where the program stands on that question matters equally.
- For families of uncommitted seniors: the quality of contact matters more than volume right now. Which coaches are initiating contact versus responding to you is a more meaningful signal at this stage.
- Athletes signed in December are signing athletics aid agreements directly with the university. The National Letter of Intent was retired in 2024. The scholarship guarantees one year of aid, not a four-year commitment. Families reviewing terms before signing should understand what renewal looks like.
The December window is weeks away. The decisions being made right now are the ones that shape it.
