The format is undecided heading into fall
The College Football Playoff will run 12 teams again this season. That much is settled.
What comes next is not. The Big Ten and SEC control the CFP's future, and they have not found common ground. The Big Ten wants 24 teams, with conference championship games removed from the calendar. The SEC prefers 16, with five guaranteed bids to the highest-ranked conference champions. A proposed middle path (16 teams now, with a commitment to expand to 24 later) collapsed when neither commissioner could agree on terms. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey noted that leadership "sometimes is not about having an immediate answer," which reflects the SEC's reluctance to commit to the timeline the Big Ten's framework requires.
A December 1 deadline exists for ESPN to be notified of any format change for the 2027 season. If no agreement is reached, the 12-team field continues. Last year's expansion deadline was pushed back months without resolution. The same dynamic is active again this fall.
Why this shows up in a recruiting pitch
Programs recruit off their recent history. A program that has appeared in consecutive 12-team playoff fields often uses that track record as evidence of where it competes nationally. That evidence is real.
But the pitch benefits from some context. Under a 12-team format, roughly 5 to 6 percent of FBS programs qualify each season. Under a 24-team format, that share more than doubles. Programs currently outside the playoff field could be inside a larger one by the time a 2027 or 2028 athlete competes, if expansion is approved. Programs already in the 12-team field are already there. Expansion does not meaningfully change the case for those families.
What 2027 families should know about the timing
The Early Signing Period for the 2027 class opens December 17. The CFP format decision deadline is December 1.
That proximity matters. A family evaluating a program this fall may not know whether the playoff expands before they sign. If any part of the program evaluation rests on how its playoff standing changes under a new format, that question may remain unanswered until after the commitment is made.
The practical guidance: evaluate programs on what they have demonstrated under the current format, not on expansion scenarios that remain unresolved. Playoff access matters. It is one factor among several, and the format that governs a 2028 athlete's career has not been decided.
The factors that hold regardless of format
Whatever the CFP decides, the most important elements of a program evaluation remain constant: coaching relationships, depth chart position, academic environment, conference strength, and the quality of the individual offer. These are not contingent on whether the playoff field is 12, 16, or 24 teams.
For families working through fall visits and offer conversations right now, the CFP expansion debate is worth understanding as background context. It is not a reason to delay decisions. It is a reason not to let a speculative playoff pitch carry more weight than a program's established track record, its coaching staff, and its fit for this specific athlete.
