Why programs are offering 2028 quarterbacks before junior year

Iowa offered three 2028 quarterbacks on June 11. Vanderbilt added one Monday. Programs are filling boards eighteen months before signing day for a reason.

What just happened this week

Iowa offered three 2028 quarterbacks at its elite camp on June 11. Vanderbilt extended a 2028 quarterback offer on June 15. Notre Dame has now offered three quarterbacks in the class. Texas has three 2028 quarterback offers on file, Boston College has sent two, and Alabama already holds a 2028 quarterback commitment.

By any measure, Power Four programs are working a quarterback board roughly eighteen months before December signing day.

Why quarterbacks move first

The position is structurally early. Most Power Four classes sign one or two quarterbacks total. The cost of being wrong at the position is high. A missed evaluation absorbs a transfer-portal acquisition the next year, and that acquisition counts against a 105-player roster cap that no longer offers a walk-on cushion.

Programs respond by building larger boards earlier and offering wider. An offer in June of rising-junior year is not a commitment from the program. It is an entry on a board that will be re-graded against the senior film of every other quarterback on the same board.

What a June 2026 offer actually signals

An early offer to a 2028 quarterback is two things at once. It is legitimate evaluation. It is also an invitation to a longer conversation, not a guarantee of a scholarship at signing day.

Programs that offer ten 2028 quarterbacks in June 2026 will sign two of them in December 2027. Most of the offered names will be informed during their junior or senior season that the program is moving on. That is the standard pattern, not a worst-case scenario.

What it means for a family right now

For a 2028 quarterback family holding a Power Four offer this June, the read is straightforward:

  • The interest is real. Evaluation budgets are limited, and programs do not extend offers casually.
  • The interest is not settled. The board will move repeatedly between now and signing day.
  • Junior film and senior film are still the largest variables. Most of what will decide the outcome has not happened yet.

For a 2028 family without an offer yet, the picture is similar. The position cycle is early, but it is also long. The boards being built now will be re-graded twice, once after this fall and once after senior film. The most important work for any 2028 quarterback in the next eighteen months is on tape, not on a contact list.
