The window moved and the spring option is gone
The NCAA moved the FBS transfer portal window from December to a 15-day period opening January 2, one day after the College Football Playoff quarterfinals conclude. The window closes January 16.
More significantly, the spring portal window has been eliminated entirely. Graduate transfers, who previously could enter at any point, now face the same 15-day restriction. The January window is the only window.
What that means for the roster your athlete is committing to
When a 2027 athlete signs during the early signing period in December, the players already on that roster will have their first portal opportunity in January 2027. That is the moment of potential roster movement at any school.
Under the old rules, players could also leave in the spring. That option is gone. Players unhappy with depth chart positions or playing time projections after signing day cannot enter the portal until January of the following year. Spring practice, for the first time in several years, runs without a portal window waiting on the other side of it.
For families, the practical implication is this: the roster your athlete signs into will largely be the roster that remains through spring. January 2027 is when the depth chart above your athlete begins to sort itself out.
The coaching change exception is shorter
When a head coach leaves a program, the coaching change exception for current scholarship players is now 15 days, beginning five days after a new coach is hired. The previous window was 30 days.
That compressed window changes the calculus for a committed 2027 athlete watching a staff turnover at their school. The players ahead of them on the depth chart face a faster decision. A new coaching staff has less time to make its case for retention. Roster clarity under a new staff arrives sooner than it used to.
The relevant question for a committed family in that situation is not only whether a coach left. It is what the players at their athlete's position decide to do in those 15 days.
A more specific question to ask before committing
The consolidated January window adds one specific due diligence question families should bring to every offer evaluation this fall: which current players at your athlete's position are underclassmen with eligibility remaining into 2027, and which are seniors finishing their final year?
A program's depth chart in September 2026 is not the depth chart your athlete arrives into in August 2027. Senior departures are predictable. What is less predictable is which underclassmen choose to test the portal in January. Understanding that distinction gives a family a more honest read of where their athlete actually fits in a program's plans, not just where they fit today.
